Zwack
Zwack is a Hungarian herbal liqueur that dates back to 1790. It is made from a secret blend of more than 40 different herbs and spices. The recipe was created by József Zwack, the royal physician to Emperor Joseph II of Austria, and has been passed down through the Zwack family for generations. Zwack’s history is intertwined with Hungary’s political struggles. During the communist regime, the Zwack family fled the country but managed to smuggle the original recipe with them. A state-owned version of Zwack was produced under the same name, but it lacked the authenticity of the family recipe. After the fall of communism, the family returned to Hungary and revived the original brand, symbolizing the spirit of resilience and independence.
Zwack is known for its complex, bittersweet flavor, which includes earthy, spicy, and citrusy notes, and it has a rich, dark amber color. It belongs to the amaro family, which are bitter liqueurs traditionally consumed as digestifs. While it can be sipped neat, Zwack is also used in cocktails or mixed with soda or tonic water.
Zwack is closely related to another Hungarian liqueur, Unicum, which is a more intensely bitter and herbal version of the drink. Unicum is also produced by the Zwack family and is considered Hungary’s national liqueur. Zwack has found its way into the global market, gaining popularity outside of Hungary due to the growing interest in herbal liqueurs and amaros. It’s appreciated for its balance of bitterness and sweetness, making it an accessible choice for cocktails and mixed drinks. Zwack is often enjoyed in shots or with soda, tonic, or as part of more sophisticated cocktails.
