Strega (Liquore Strega)
Liquore Strega, often referred to simply as “Strega”, is an Italian liqueur with a long and storied history. Strega was first created in Benevento, Italy, in 1860 by Giuseppe Alberti. The recipe is said to be a closely guarded secret, and although many attempts have been made at obtaining the recipe, it has been safely passed down through generations of the Alberti family.
The name “Strega” means “witch” in Italian, and the liqueur is often associated with legends and folklore. According to tradition, Benevento was known for its witches, who were said to gather herbs and spices to create magical potions. It is stated, in fact, that witches, from all over the world, gathered at night around a magical walnut, and that they had created a magic potion that united forever couples that drank it. Strega is sometimes referred to as the “witches’ brew” due to these associations.
Over the years, Strega has been featured in various works of art, literature, and film, further cementing its place in popular culture. Notable figures such as Ernest Hemingway and Salvador Dalí were said to be fans of the liqueur, and it has made appearances in classic films like “La Dolce Vita” and “The Godfather.” These cultural references have helped Strega maintain its status as an iconic Italian spirit.
In the early 20th century, Liquore Strega gained popularity and recognition when it received a royal endorsement from King Vittorio Emanuele III of Italy. The king was so impressed with the liqueur that he granted the Alberti family, the creators of Strega, the prestigious title of “Official Suppliers of the Royal House of Savoy.” This royal connection added to Strega’s prestige and helped it gain favor among Italy’s elite.
