Accent Tools
Beyond the barspoons, mixing glasses, shakers and jiggers, there is a next-level class of accent tools to explore, once the bar basics become comfortable. These essential tools include graters, peelers, channel knives, etc., for the purpose of creating out-of-this-world garnishes, grating fresh spices into cocktails, and capturing the right amount of fruit peel to make the cocktail outstanding.
Graters and micro-graters are especially useful in the addition of hard spices, such as nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove. These can create a fine powder, which is superior to those ground spices obtained through the local grocery.
Peelers are essential in providing strips of fruit peel (i.e. orange peel, lemon peel, apple peel), and are useful in capturing the essential oils in the fresh fruit skin.
Channel knives are purposeful for creating large strips of fruit peel, ideal for making curls and twists for the garnish.
Each of these items are relatively inexpensive, and may be found at a variety of stores, from grocery stores to big box retail stores.
