The Man in the Green Hat
George L. Cassiday, known as the "Man in the Green Hat," was a prominent bootlegger who supplied alcohol to members of the U.S. Congress during Prohibition (1920–1933). A World War I veteran, Cassiday began his bootlegging career in 1920. He was so trusted that a congressman provided him with an office in the basement of the House Office Building. After his arrest in 1925 (during which he was wearing a light green felt hat), he was banned from the House. Consequently, he switched to the Senate office building.
The Man in the Green Hat was arrested again in 1930. He was convicted of a felony and sentenced to 18 months in jail. But Cassiday never spent a night there. He would go to jail every morning and sign himself in. Then, at the end of the day, he would sign himself out.
