Chumleys

“‘86 ‘em!”

Chumley's, established in 1922 by Leland Stanford Chumley, was a renowned speakeasy located at 86 Bedford Street in New York City's Greenwich Village. This establishment became a haven for writers, poets, and activists during the Prohibition era.  Notably, Chumley's featured concealed entrances and exits, including an unmarked door at 86 Bedford Street and a hidden courtyard entrance on Barrow Street, complete with trap doors and secret staircases to facilitate discreet patron movement.

A popular theory suggests that the term "86" originated from Chumley's address. According to this account, during Prohibition, police would alert the bar before conducting raids, advising the bartender to "86" the customers. This code instructed patrons to exit swiftly through the 86 Bedford Street door, while officers approached via the Pamela Court entrance.
